Installing the SimBio Active Learning System® at the Sub-Account or Course Level (Canvas Admin instructions - LTI 1.3)

If your school does not currently have an integration agreement with SimBio, please start by reading Initiate a Canvas Integration with SimBio Active Learning System®.

Once the approval process has been completed, the next steps toward successfully integrating the SimBio Active Learning System® with your Canvas course need to be completed by someone that has a Canvas Admin account. (Likely the IT person for your department can steer you in the right direction). 

Admin Instructions

  1. Log into your Canvas Admin Account and navigate to the account where you want to deploy the application.

  2. On the left hand menu click on Developer Keys and on the new screen click on +Developer Key

  3. Scroll down to +LTI Key in the dropdown menu.

  4. Scroll to Paste JSON in the Configure Method dropdown on the next screen.

  5. Paste the JSON file that was sent to you by SimBio in the LTI configuration box box that appears. You can name the key whatever you like but we suggest SimBio Active Learning System. Then hit Save.

  6. Copy the client id to be used in the next steps.

  7. The next step is to install the SimBio Active Learning System app where you would like it to reside in your system. It can be installed at the Admin, Sub-Account, or Course level. To install at the Admin or Root level, you can see our article Installing the SimBio Active Learning System® at the Root Level (Canvas Admin instructions - LTI 1.3) or continue with these instructions.

  8. Navigate to the Account where you would like the app to reside. (This example will demonstrate adding the app to the Cell Biology Sub-Account at SimBio University.) Click the Settings option in the sidebar, click the Apps tab towards the top of the screen, and click the View App Configuration button. 

  9. Click the +App button.

  10. Click the Configuration Type drop-down menu and select By Client ID.

  11. Paste the Client ID that you created and copied in Step 6 and click Submit.

  12. Click Install.

  13. Return to the Apps page in your admin account. Click on the Monitor tab, and then scroll to the App you just installed and click on it.

  14. You will then need click Unlock APP in order to unlock the APP.

     

  15. You will then click the Pencil Edit button to change the App's status from Not Available to Available. 

  16. Don't forget to click Save.
  17. You can then copy the client Id and the deployment id from this page to send back to SimBio.
  18. In order for the app to be fully configured, you need to send an email with the following information to julia@simbio.com: 
    1. Client id 
    2. Deployment id 
    3. Canvas Domain/URL (To find this information - log into your Canvas Account and from the Dashboard, copy the website URL)

  19. The SimBio Active Learning System application is now installed in your instance of Canvas. Each professor who would like to use this integration will receive a unique SimUText Key for their course and will use that to connect the application to their SimUText. Add your SimUText to your course in Canvas
